Point Fermin History San Pedro

The first and last lighthouse-keepers at Point Fermin were Women. Mary and Helen Smith kept the light from December 15,1874, until 1882. Mary is listed as the official keeper.

Thelma and Juanita Austin assumed their Father’s position as a keeper in 1925, after both of their parent’s passed away. Thelma stayed until 1927, when the Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department assumed care of the station and opened the grounds for use as a park.

The lighthouse was automated and powered by electricity, making a keeper no longer necessary.

South Bay's History of George H. Peck

George was just a regular railroad worker for the Southern Pacific. When he first laid eyes on San Pedro he decided he liked it's look and uniqueness. He ended up settling in San Pedro in 1886 and soon after became a wildly successful real estate developer.

Among his lots of transactions were the 1913 sale of 104 acres that would later become Fort MacArthur, and the sale of land in 1911 to Standard Oil for what eventually would become the Chevron refinery in El Segundo.

He also owned real estate in Manhattan Beach, developing the El Porto district, and streets were named after him and one of his daughters.

Unfortunately he died in 1940. Funds from his trust were used to make recreational facilities in San Pedro, including the four parks that were made from land that did once belong to him.

Also, in addition to the largest, Peck Park, for which he began to donate land in 1929, San Pedro's Rena, Alma, and Leland parks all came from Peck's Holdings and were named after his three children as well as some street names.

He might have just been a train conductor but he saw San Pedros Potential and became a successful developer in the 1900's.

Things to do in San Pedro No.1

Gordon Inman was born and raised in the projects of San Pedro. He has watched the town grow from barely nothing to a lot of something. He hopes you can enjoy the city and growth as well.
I will be posting about attractions in the area you can do the rest of the summer or any day of the year. I hope you enjoy! Let me know if you visit any places.

-Visit one of the last of the bath houses built in California that was the original Cabrillo Museaum. Recently renovated after it was Vacant for decades. The place has lots of beach activities and various events.
THE CABRILLO BEACH BATHHOUSE LOCATION:
3800 Stephen White Drive (off Pacific Ave) (310) 548-7554

-Fireboat #2, which is located in the award winning firestation #112. Commisioned in 1925, the classic fireboat is still a part of the fire departments fleet with a size of 99 feet long and a 19 foot beam. The 6 four-stage pumps would produce 10,200 gallons of water per minute. Now it is just displayed outside like a landmark.
THE FIREBOAT’S LOCATION-
Fire station #112, Berth 86 (at the end of 5th St), San Pedro
