Point Fermin History San Pedro

The first and last lighthouse-keepers at Point Fermin were Women. Mary and Helen Smith kept the light from December 15,1874, until 1882. Mary is listed as the official keeper.

Thelma and Juanita Austin assumed their Father’s position as a keeper in 1925, after both of their parent’s passed away. Thelma stayed until 1927, when the Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department assumed care of the station and opened the grounds for use as a park.

The lighthouse was automated and powered by electricity, making a keeper no longer necessary.
